California
The San Diego Foundation has announced that it has collaborated with community members, supporters, and 11 regional nonprofit partners in applying for a Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) state grant to envision a climate-resilient future that will preserve, protect, and strengthen San Diego’s historic barrios, including Logan, Stockton, Grant Hill, Mt. Hope, Sherman, Southcrest, and Shelltown. The proposed plan aims to invest a total of $56 million in healthy homes, transportation improvements, community-led food production and distribution, community centers, and green spaces, among other climate and community benefit projects.
The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced more than $1 million in grants to eight organizations from its Neighborhood Fund, which was created in 2021 by an area resident to assist nonprofits that serve Sacramento’s Del Paso Heights neighborhood. Recipients include Feed Sacramento Homeless, Hmong Youth & Parents United, SAC Connect, and Sierra Nevada Journeys.
Connecticut
The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has announced general operating support grants totaling $3.76 million to nonprofits providing food, health care, housing, economic opportunity, arts and cultural experiences, and other essential services. The funding includes more than $2 million in new one-year grants awarded through the foundation’s annual responsive grants program to 77 organizations , including the NAACP's One Million Jobs Campaign in Connecticut, Latinas & Power, and Urban Community Alliance. The foundation also disbursed nearly $1.7 million for multiyear grants awarded to 59 organizations in 2021 and 2022 as part of a three-year initiative to advance racial equity and address the impacts of COVID-19.
Florida
The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has announced that it awarded 116 scholarships totaling more than $1.2 million to recent high school graduates enrolling in college in 2023. The average award was $10,000. Since 1985, the foundation has awarded more than $16.8 million in scholarships.
Illinois
The Chicago Community Trust (CCT) has announced the addition of Marisa Novara as vice president of community impact. Novara will lead the team that develops and implements strategic initiatives and grantmaking to reduce the racial and ethnic wealth gap and address critical needs in the region. In addition, CCT named Sheila M. Cawley its chief philanthropy officer. Novara previously served as commissioner of the City of Chicago Department of Housing and as vice president of the Metropolitan Planning Council, where she spearheaded the Cost of Segregation Project. For the past decade, she has been at the Museum of Science and Industry, first as vice president of external affairs and then as senior vice president and chief revenue strategist.
Michigan
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced that its Detroit Auto Dealers Association Charitable Foundation Fund awarded nine grants totaling $300,000 to help improve the quality of life for children across the region. The fund supports nonprofits that benefit children and youth in grades preK-12 in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, St. Clair, Monroe and Livingston counties. The latest grant recipients include Detroit Institute for Children, Lawrence Technical University, Crimestoppers, and the Michigan Hispanic Collaborative. Supported by proceeds from the North American International Auto Show Charity Preview, the fund has awarded more than $7 million since 1999.
Minnesota
The Minneapolis Foundation has announced $725,000 in fair and affordable housing grants from the OneMPLS Fund, which is focused on pooling resources to address pressing local needs. Recipients include African Career Education and Resources, Hope Community, Inquilinxs Unidxs por Justicia, and the American Indian Community Development Corporation.
New Mexico
The Los Alamos Community Foundation has announced a $500 grant to the Los Alamos Youth Soccer League for equipment, primarily soccer balls. The grant was funded by the Los Alamos Community Youth Sports Endowment, established by Paul and Jill Cook with the purpose of supporting competitive youth sports in Los Alamos.
New York
The Rochester Area Community Foundation (RACF) has announced that it is collaborating with its geographic affiliate, the Wayne County Community Endowment, to award $108,670 to 14 nonprofits serving Wayne County and its residents. The endowment grants, along with contributions from several funds established by county residents specifically to support Wayne County, totaled $44,500. RACF added $64,170 from discretionary and committee-advised funds. Recipients include Arc of Wayne, Glow Up Girl, Scarlet Thread Ministries, and Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $322,800 to 36 organizations working to help children. Recipients include Camp Fire Heart of Oklahoma, Cavett Kids Foundation, Freedom City, and House of Healing.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced that the Rhode Island PBS Scholarship was awarded to Isabella Ba, who will receive up to $60,000 over four years. Ba will attend Rhode Island College, where she will major in communications.
Wisconsin
The Eau Claire Community Foundation has announced a bequest from the estate of William A. Bingham, who died in 2021. The largest gift ever received in the foundation’s 26-year history includes $4.75 million to establish the William A. Bingham Family Endowment Fund, which will boost the the foundation’s annual grantmaking capacity from approximately $140,000 to more than $330,000.
